Zac Taylor, the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, used a number of trick plays during the Monday night game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. One of the most inventive positions in sports is that of offensive coordinator. At every stage of the game, you need to devise strategies to keep the opposition guessing. The offensive coordinator must constantly be creative, whether it means coming up with complicated trick plays or something as basic as rushing the ball in a clear throwing situation. This occasionally produces hilariously terrible play concepts that baffle experts.
Analysts of all sorts did not hesitate to criticize the Bengals poor execution
To put things in perspective, the Cincinnati Bengals were starting a backup quarterback in the face of a very skilled front seven defense. The majority of the season has seen them struggle to run the ball, and coordinators frequently attempt trick plays to boost the quarterback’s confidence during the contest. The ball was once attempted to be double passed by the Bengals, with backup quarterback Jake Browning to Ja’marr Chase, who then returned it to Browning. Given that Browning was tackled for a loss right away, it’s unclear if the play was intended to be a triple pass.
But the second effort was considerably worse. In the third quarter, with the game close, Browning found receiver Tyler Boyd out to the left. Browning lost his balance throughout the process and was almost eliminated from the play. The Jaguars defensive line intercepted a pass that Boyd attempted to pass to Bengals running back Joe Mixon, either on purpose or on the spur of the moment. It’s probable that the trick play took too long to design and was simply too complex. Overly prolonged trick plays give the defensive plays time to figure out the trap. In this particular drama, it is precisely what took place.
The play call and design were so ludicrous that Hall of Fame quarterback Peryton Manning was one commentator who was completely taken aback. Peyton Manning spoke his ideas freely on his podcast, Manningcast:
“What are we doing? Why won’t they let Browning to throw? In shock, Manning leaped out of his chair and threw his Bluetooth headset, shouting.
Despite the fact that this play obviously ended disastrously, the Bengals’ luck for the evening was fortunately not greatly affected. Thanks to a brilliant performance by quarterback Jake Browning, the Bengals eventually prevailed in the contest thanks to a game-winning field goal.
Even though the Bengals’ offensive performance was outstanding all night long, it’s important to remember their completely failed attempt at trick plays. Head coach Zac Taylor of the Bengals and offensive coordinator Brian Callahan are known for designing clumsy trick plays that take an excessive amount of time to execute. At Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday, the Bengals will try to carry on their Cinderella Story against the Indianapolis Colts.
