Lions quarterback Jared Goff defends head coach Dan Campbell after a failed fake punt call in the Packers’ Thanksgiving Day loss

Following their efforts over the last two weeks, the Detroit Lions have raised a few eyebrows. While they were able to pull off a comeback victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 11 after falling behind, they were unable to defeat the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day. Despite those weak performances, Lions quarterback Jared Goff claimed there is no debate about head coach Dan Campbell’s leadership in the Detroit locker room.

Campbell has a history of going for it on 4th down, and he has been mainly successful this season as the Lions lead the NFC North. In the 29-22 loss to the Packers, they were only 1 of 5 on fourth-down tries, and one of those play calls was a fake punt from deep in Detroit territory that Green Bay snuffed out and defeated.

Lions coach Dan Campbell delivered a tearful postgame response to loss

When he met with the media after the game, Campbell accepted responsibility for the play. “Yeah, look, that’s a bad call on me,” Campbell admitted. “That’s a horrible decision. That was wrong of me to do to those guys. That’s a horrible decision.”

Jared Goff, on the other hand, was not about to let his coach fall on his sword and accept punishment.

“We trust the hell out of him,” Goff stated. “When he makes those calls, we have complete faith in him.” Most of the time, he is correct. When he isn’t, we must pick him up and make the necessary plays to help us win the game. But, yeah, believe him and adore it when he puts us in positions that make him right.”

The Lions will look to get back on track against the Saints in Week 13 in New Orleans.
