According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Donovan (elbow) has began a throwing program at the Cardinals’ spring training camp in Florida.

Donovan is making well in his rehabilitation after having flexor tendon surgery in August. It is expected that he will be ready to go when spring training starts. Donovan is projected to return to the Cardinals as a regular in 2024, though not necessarily at the same position.

That’s fantastic news for a Cardinals team seeking to rebound from a last-place finish in the NL Central in 2023. In 95 games this season, Donovan batted.284 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI. He also has a solid.365 on-base percentage and is an important part of their lineup.

He made a splash in his first season (2022), hitting.281 with a.394 on-base percentage. He played left field, right field, second base, third base, first base, and shortstop in 2023.

The Cardinals are anticipated to be aggressive this offseason, which may explain why Donovan isn’t guaranteed a spot in 2024. They must wait and watch how the chips fall.

Donovan won a Gold Glove in 2022 and finished third in the vote for National League Rookie of the Year.
