European giants Manchester United and Barcelona are among the clubs fined by UEFA following breaches of their own Financial Fair Play regulations.

UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) had been reaching a conclusion in the assessment of the break-even requirement covering the financial years spanning 2019 and 2022.

Man Utd have been fined 300,000 euros (£266,000) after reporting a minor break-even deficit, a sanction for which Turkish outfit Konyaspor and Cypriot team APOEL also received penalties of 100,000 euros (£88,000).

Barcelona were fined 500,000 euros (£444,000) for wrongly reporting, in the financial year 2022, profits on disposal of intangible assets, other than player transfers which are not a relevant income under the regulations.

United’s fine is related to previous UEFA FFP regulations, which does not have an impact on the club’s budget for player recruitment during the summer transfer window.

“While disappointed by the outcome, Manchester United accepts this fine for what UEFA acknowledges to be a minor technical breach of its previous Financial Fair Play rules,” a club statement read.

“This reflected a change in the way that UEFA adjusted for Covid-19 losses during the 2022 reporting period, which allowed us to recognise only 15m euros (£13m) of the 281m euros (£257m) of revenues lost due to the pandemic within the FFP calculation.

Post-pandemic, the club’s revenues have recovered strongly and are forecast to reach a record level in the current financial year.

“The club continues to support the enforcement of rules to promote financial fair play and sustainability across domestic and European football.”

Elsewhere, the CFCB First Chamber found that Belgian club Royal Antwerp and Trabzonspor of Turkey did not comply with the break-even requirement, so settlement agreements were reached.

Anderlecht and Istanbul Basaksehir were fined 100,000 euros (£88,000) and 400,000 euro (£355,000) respectively for failure to comply with previous settlement agreements.

UEFA confirmed Paris St Germain, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Monaco, Roma, Besiktas and Marseille all fulfilled the targets set for the financial year 2022. The CFCB is set to monitor compliance with the settlement agreement during next season.
