Newcastle United has started trying out potential January Sandro Tonali substitutes.

Tonali, 23, who was banned for ten months for engaging in illicit betting, will now miss the majority of the 2023–24 season.

Newcastle United must so focus on finding a suitable replacement for the suspended Italian after signing him for £55 million in the summer.

While a number of names have already been connected to a move to St. James’ Park, Eddie Howe’s list has Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City at the top.

A mid-season transfer could result from Phillips, who is struggling to get consistent playing time at the Etihad and, based on his own recent admission, is anxious for more minutes in order to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championship next summer.

And almost all parties concerned would find that a move to Newcastle United—albeit on loan—would be the ideal solution.

The Cityzens are willing to let go of the England international, but they are unlikely to approve a loan move when other teams would be interested in making a permanent transfer deal, according to a recent report from the Telegraph.

For supporters of Geordie football, there is excellent news: it is believed that the player wants to make the move.

The club will ultimately make the decision, but given how eager Phillips is to play, Pep Guardiola might feel obligated to grant his midfielder’s wishes.
