Greg Alexander, a former halfback for the Penrith Panthers and the NRL, has encouraged Ryan Papenhuyzen of the Melbourne Storm to reclaim his former form and have a fantastic 2024 season. “They probably all had a hangover.”

Alexander’s support follows the Sydney Morning Herald’s accusations that Papenhuyzen has been connected to a rival team and that a third party has contacted another NRL team in an attempt to sign the 25-year-old.

The Storm’s depth at fullback has grown during Papenhuyzen’s time on the sidelines, but his current contract with the team expires at the end of the 2025 campaign.Although Melbourne-bred Sualauvi Faalogo made an impression on critics during his international debut for Samoa in their loss to the Kangaroos, Nick Meaney has been a key player for the Storm at fullback.

Since then, it’s been rumoured that the 20-year-old plans to extend his contract and move up into the top 30 for the 2024 campaign.

Alexander stated on SEN 1170 Breakfast, “I think he’ll be back (to his best). I saw him last Friday, and he was very confident that he’d be back running after Christmas and ready to go.

“The only concern is that it’s the same leg; the broken ankle was on the same leg as the knee, so the knee will have more time to heal,” he explained.

“I believe he will return; the muscle in his quad and thigh wasted away a little.”

Alexander continued her speech by discussing the allegations that surfaced the previous weekend that Papenhuyzen was starting to look around at other teams.

The legendary player for the Panthers said that even though the fullback has a history of injuries, he would take the chance and stick with him if he were in charge of the Storm, especially with young talent Sua Fa’alogo coming through the ranks.

Alexander continued, “I’d go with him, I’d take that risk.”

“I believe he will heal and that his knee will be OK.

“I don’t think that will be a problem, the knee, by the time he gets back on the pitch after another offseason, even though it’s an injured offseason.”
