Luton Town have completed a surprise free transfer in advance of….

Luton Town have confirmed the signing of former England international Andros Townsend, who could make his debut against Nottingham Forest after the international break.

The 32-year-old winger has been a free agent since leaving Everton at the end of last season. He has agreed a short-term contract until January with the Hatters as he aims to help them achieve Premier League survival.

Townsend will now spend the international break getting to know his new surroundings. Luton are next in action when they visit the City Ground after the international break, a game in which Townsend could feature. Due to being a free agent, Luton were able to complete the signing of the winger outside of the transfer window. Townsend has been training with Luton in order to keep up his fitness, with the player impressing enough to earn a contract with the club.

“I feel like it’s a good fit and these last couple of weeks have been good for both parties,” he told Luton’s official website. “I think it had to be right and I feel over the last two weeks we’ve had a look at each other and done that.

“I’ve seen where I can help this team and on the flipside the manager has seen where I can help – whether that’s on the pitch, in the dressing room or on the training field – with my enthusiasm and experience.”

Townsend has not come up against Forest too many times in his career. His latest appearance against the Reds came in the 2014/15 season, where he provided an assist in Tottenham’s 3-1 win in the Carabao Cup.

The former England man has also come up against Forest during loan spells with Ipswich in 2010/2011 and Birmingham City in 2011/2012. Townsend was on the losing side for both games.
