Mark Robins is sweating on a clearer prognosis on key Coventry City midfielder Ben Sheaf who limped off just before the break at Ewood Park with a suspected calf tear.

The Sky Blues player had already suffered a cut to his head which had to be bandaged up in the first half before having to be substituted just before the break, with City trailing 1-0.

Asked what the injury was and how serious it is, Robins said: “It’s a calf problem but we don’t know whether it’s a tear or not. It’s looking like a tear at the moment so we have just got to wait and see. He had hurt his head as well but he was feeling his calf. I am hoping they have caught it before it has torn but it’s not been our luck this year has it!”

Sheaf has only recently returned from a calf tear that kept him side-lined for seven matches but, on a more positive note, skipper Liam Kelly made what Robins described as an “outstanding” return to the side when he went on in the injured midfielder’s place, while fellow midfielder Jamie Allen – who has been out for three matches with ankle bruising – could be back for the weekend’s CBS Arena clash with Reading.

“Jamie may be OK because he was here tonight,” said the manager, speaking after Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw, courtesy of a late equaliser from goalkeeper Ben Wilson.

“I have just spoken to him. If he gets a few pain killers down him he may be OK but we won’t know until Friday, I suppose.”
