Coventry City have suffered a major injury blow with the news that Matty Godden could be out for up to four months.

The Sky Blues striker suffered an ankle injury against Sheffield United on Wednesday night and scans later revealed that he has ruptured ligaments and he requires surgery to repair them.

Godden was conspicuous by his absence at Stoke today when Mark Robins’ men recorded a brilliant 2-0 win at the Bet365 Stadium to secure their third Championship victory in a row and lift them another place to third from bottom.

Robins was delighted with the win but Godden’s injury was a clear dampener on an otherwise excellent day’s work on the road. The 31-year-old has had horrendous luck with injuries and illness over the last couple of years with a long-standing foot injury and appendicitis among his problems.

Asked about Godden’s absence, the City boss revealed: “Matty is going to be out for a while, three to four months. He’s ruptured a ligament in his right ankle so it’s just his luck really, terrible luck, and he’s going to be out for a few months.

“His foot was in the air and the ball hit him mid-air with a loose ankle and he moved it outside and he has put his weight through it as it landed and obviously that has caused him a major problem. Sod’s law!”

Asked if he will require surgery, he said: “Probably. It’s a really big blow for him and for us.”
