Wrexham’s mixed start to the League Two season is set to receive a major boost as talisman Paul Mullin hits the injury comeback trail.

The prolific goalscorer has been sorely missed during the opening month of the campaign as the Red Dragons began life back in the EFL in his absence. However, Phil Parkinson will be able to breathe a sigh of relief as his star man begins training ahead of his return to action.

The 28-year-old forward provided the firepower with 38 league goals last term as the Welsh outfit achieved promotion but disaster struck during pre-season. His injury came after a collision with Manchester United’s goalkeeper during Wrexham’s 4-0 victory over the Premier League giants.

It was later determined that Mullin had suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs in the challenge. His unfortunate luck meant that he had to extend his stay in the US following the conclusion of the team’s summer trip.

However, the Liverpudlian marksman is now back on the training pitch as he looks to make up for lost time and help kickstart his club’s season. Speaking to the Evening Leader, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson provided an update on the striker’s condition.

He said: “[Mullin] is back on the training ground which is so good to see. We are getting there. Each day he gets stronger. Obviously he has had a long period of inactivity but he is back out running on the training ground doing unopposed stuff; finishing etc, and he looks good.”

The Racecourse Ground side have struggled without the former EFL journeyman’s experience and ability at the start of the League Two season. They currently sit 16th in the fourth-tier table after five games played, with only one of their matches having resulted in victory.

Although goals have not necessarily been hard to come by for Parkinson’s men, with their 14 strikes only bettered by one team in the division, they have leaked goals so far. In fact, their 14 goals conceded during the first month of the season is the worst record in the league so far this term.

Clearly, Wrexham have a lot to work on during the coming months but the return of Mullin to action will provide a major boost to the team. No date has been put on his full return to fitness but his return to training would suggest that he is roughly on schedule for an injury of this type.

This news will help to buoy morale in the Wrexham camp after they exited the EFL Cup following a penalty shootout loss versus Bradford City. The second-round loss came after Mark Hughes’ team was handed a controversial spot kick in the third minute, which Tyler Smith converted.
