While playing for the Boston Celtics against the Indiana Pacers on Friday night, Marcus Smart appeared to have a catastrophic ankle injury, but further X-rays and an MRI revealed no significant damage.
Marcus Smart, a rookie guard for the Boston Celtics, may have just suffered a catastrophic ankle injury. In the fourth quarter of the team’s game against the Indiana Pacers on Friday night, Smart sustained an injury. On a fast break, he drove to the basket and rolled his ankle as we were being fouled.
UPDATE: According to NESN, Smart’s ankle sustained only little damage. He has a bone bruise and sprain, and his recovery time is predicted to be two to three weeks:
It was so awful that Smart continued to scream in anguish while lying on the ground, and a stretcher had to be brought out before he could be carried off the court on it. A.J. Price of the Pacers hurt him by driving to the basket; as he was coming down, he landed on Lavoy Allen’s foot and the ankle rolled.
When the action started, the score was 75 all.
When the play took place, the Boston audience was dead silent since it was clear that Smart had been gravely hurt
Marcus Smart gives the crowd the thumbs up as he is wheeled off the court by Dr. McKeon and crew due to what appears to be a leg injury.
Although Boston went on a 7-2 run after Smart was removed from the game, losing their top offseason acquisition would still be a devastating setback for Boston.
In the 2014 NBA Draught, Boston selected combo guard Smart, who stands 6’4″, with the sixth overall pick. He was twice named to the All-Big 12 First Team. Smart concluded his two-year OSU career with 189 steals, which ranks second in school history. He also set a school record with 2.94 steals per game for his career.
He led the Cowboys with 18.0 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.9 steals per game in his sophomore year at Oklahoma State. He was named an AP All-American in his senior year of college thanks to his third-best national steal rate of 2.9 per game.
