On-loan at Luton Villa keeper Steer praises Isted for being “absolutely brilliant” despite being injured once more

When Jed Steer suffered yet another Achilles injury during Friday night’s FA Cup match between Luton and Chelsea at Kenilworth Road, the Match of the Day analyst Micah Richards was devastated. The visitors ultimately won 3-2.

The stopper experienced two similar issues that kept him out of action in 2016 and also in 2019. The ex-Manchester City and England defender was at Steer’s parent club Aston Villa between 2015 and 2019.

It cruelly happened again after just 14 minutes of the fifth round tie yesterday, the 29-year-old falling to the floor unchallenged when coming out for a ball over the top, and was stretchered off in some pain.

With the game broadcast live on BBC One, speaking at half time, Richards said: “It was devastating as it’s always a worry when a keeper goes down with no-one around him.

“I was worried that it might be a repeat of his Achilles, but he’s such a nice kid and it does seem pretty horrible.

“He worked so hard to get back into the team, and he got back into the Villa team. Now he comes on loan to get some games, and hopefully he’ll be okay.”

Isted came on in his place, earning high praise from both Richards and fellow pundit Alan Shearer for some outstanding saves from Saul Niguez, Kenedy, and Romelu Lukaku in the first half alone.

Richards and fellow pundit Alan Shearer praised Isted, who replaced him, for his outstanding saves from Saul Niguez, Kenedy, and Romelu Lukaku in the first half alone.

The custodian has come on and he was absolutely brilliant’, said pundit and colleague Richards. “These players are live on TV and we don’t know a lot of these players, so to get these opportunities it’s brilliant.” Richards and fellow pundit Alan Shearer praised Isted for some outstanding saves from Saul Niguez, Kenedy and Romelu Lukaku in the first half alone.
