Mark Robins will continue to assess the fitness of Coventry City’s star striker Matty Godden today before deciding whether he’s ready to return against Derby County.

The Rams face the Sky Blues at St Andrew’s on Saturday with the 29-year-old striker looking increasingly closer to returning to the matchday squad.

Godden may not be fit enough to start but, as has been the case in recent weeks with the likes of influential skipper Liam Kelly and marauding wing-back Fankaty Dabo, the City manager is keen to break his best players back into the side from the bench.

Matty Godden’s prognosis after breaking down against Millwall on January 2 was that he could be out anything between two to three months with a plantar fascia foot injury – a condition the player has described as feeling like he is walking with a piece of Lego stuck in his sock.

But he is back in full training and Robins is convinced the striker is edging closer to a return.

The manager revealed last week that he hoped to have the striker back for the last ten games of the season.

And asked ahead of Saturday’s game with the Rams if he’s ready to be involved, Robins said: “It’s too early to give you that information. We’ll look at what his outputs are.

“He trained again yesterday and we’ll see where he’s at but the potential is that he’s going to be OK and that he’ll be able to play some part, so I’ve got my fingers crossed on that.

“I’ll watch him again in training today and do little bits of work with him and some final bits of preparation and see how he is and what he’s looking like.”

The Frenchman had to go off at half-time at Swansea with a suspected torn stomach muscle, replaced by Fankaty Dabo who was on the bench for the first time since suffering medial knee ligament damage against Sheffield Wednesday last month.

Dacosta was missing from the matchday squad at Blackburn when Josh Pask returned to the bench, and he remains a doubt ahead of the weekend clash with Derby.

“He’s not fit and I don’t know when that’s going to settle,” said the City boss ahead of the Derby fixture.

“It’s starting to heal.

“It’s been a week/nine days now so he’s nine days closer but I can’t give a time when he’ll be back, but it won’t be too much longer I wouldn’t have thought.”
