Former Nottingham Forest manager catapults himself into a’strong’ position for….

Former Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies is said to want the Rangers job.

Rangers are looking for a new manager after sacking Michael Beale on Sunday, following a poor start to the new season at Ibrox. Davies has been out of football since being sacked by Forest over nine years ago and is understood to be keen on a return to management in Glasgow.

The Daily Record report Davies plans to boost his bid for the top job at Ibrox by assembling an experienced backroom team with “strong” Rangers connections. It is said he already has “strong support” from key figures at the club.

Davies had two spells as manager of Forest. He guided the Reds to the Championship play-offs in successive seasons during his first period as manager, but they suffered semi-final defeats on both occasions in 2010 and 2011.

After leaving the club during the summer of 2011, he returned in February 2013 under former owner Fawaz Al Hasawi. But his second spell in charge at the City Ground was unsuccessful and he was sacked by Al Hasawi after just over a year, being given his marching orders after a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Derby County at Pride Park.

The Record report the majority of Davies’ time out of football has been because of family reasons and he has rejected previous offers from both Championship and League One clubs, but is now keen to return to management at the highest level.
