News that West Ham United want to sign Nelson Semedo from Wolverhampton Wanderers emerged yesterday.
According to a report from Football Transfers, Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo is firmly on the West Ham radar ahead of the January transfer window.
Now, if David Moyes brings him to the London Stadium this winter, I reckon that the majority of Hammers fans will be over the moon.
The West Ham players will surely welcome the arrival of someone like Semedo as well, what with his incredible pace, athleticism and all-round ability.
However, there will be one Hammer in particular who might not be too happy if the Wolves man rocks up at the London Stadium in January…
West Ham signing Nelson Semedo would be bad news for one player, Vladimir Coufal, who is having a rebirth at the London Stadium this season.
The 31-year-old right-back has three assists already this season and appears to be back to his best.
He’s a powerful right-back that ex-footballer Michael Brown called ‘amazing’.
However, if West Ham want to make some genuine progress, Moyes has to sign a proper right-back with rapid speed – more of a modern day, progressive type player.
That might sound harsh, but it’s true. And although Semedo will be 30 in November, he is one of the fastest right-backs around.
If the Portugal international arrives at the London Stadium in January, it could very well be the end of Coufal at West Ham – certainly as a regular starter.
I think Nelson Semedo would be a fantastic addition for West Ham, as long as he doesn’t cost anything more than £15 million or so. He’d be a clear upgrade on Coufal as far as I’m concerned.
The 31-year-old recently admitted that he would probably sign a new contract if offered one by the Hammers. Whether that ever becomes a reality remains to be seen though.
If Semedo does arrive at West Ham this winter, I highly doubt that the Czech Republic international will feature regularly for us anymore.
When January comes around, the 29-year-old will have just 18 months remaining on his contract at Molineux, so he could well be available for a bargain fee. And Moyes must not hesitate to bring him to the club.
