Leaky Blackburn Rovers suffer injury blow to key position ahead of Coventry City test

Coventry City opposition news via CoventryLive as opponents are scheduled to travel to the West Midlands on Wednesday night with a new injury issue

The news that the team’s starting goalkeeper is a serious doubt for the Championship game has dealt Blackburn Rovers a blow ahead of their trip to Coventry City this week. The team of Jon Dahl Tomasson will enter the Coventry Building Society Arena with the unfavourable record of having given up 20 goals, which they share with Southampton. 15 of those goals have come in the last five league games.

Aynsley Pears, Rovers’ starting custodian, left the game with an ankle injury soon after the hour mark, and was replaced by Leopold Wahlstedt, a level-untested replacement, as a result of their most recent defensive breakdown, which allowed Leicester City to thrash Rovers 4-1 at Ewood Park on Sunday. The 25-year-old was unable to put any weight on his right ankle, making him a serious worry for Wednesday night’s travel to take on the Sky Blues and then Saturday’s away game against Queens Park Rangers when Wahlstedt is waiting in the wings for his moment to shine.

The 24-year-old Swede, who has one senior friendly cap for his nation, signed with Rovers in August for an undisclosed fee after previously being linked with Manchester United. He previously played for Norwegian club Odd. He replaced Pears against Leicester after he gave up two goals in the dying minutes, making his Championship debut. Tomasson, though, is certain that he will be prepared to fill in if Pears is, as expected, unable to play in the away games.
