West Brom could be set to receive a share of an £88million bonus after the Premier League and EFL reached a historic deal to sell their television rights together for the first time, according to the Daily Mail.
The newspaper shared the news via their website on 28 September, reporting the EFL clubs will receive 14.75% of the pooled media rights from next season, as well as an £88million bonus this season.
The TV deal is reportedly set to begin in 2028 after the details were presented to Football League clubs in a meeting in Derby, in what has been described as a major breakthrough in what has been a standoff with the Premier League for several years.
A huge deal for all EFL clubs, but West Brom especially need it
This news has come at a critical time for the Baggies. The club’s ongoing financial issues have led to suggestions that players may need to be sold in January to help the club with running costs, but a potential bonus income from this deal could help offset that necessity down the line.
The Daily Mail report shared that this deal would lead to an immediate boost in funding for lower-league clubs, and whilst the exact figures will depend on future TV deals, the share is more than double what EFL clubs currently receive.
As well as this, the deal means that the money from EFL television rights will rise directly in line with the Premier League deal, which hits record highs almost every year [The Athletic, 25 August] and is the majority source of income for the mega-rich top-division clubs.
There is sure to be a collective ease of tension among EFL clubs and owners who have recently felt the effects of financial restrictions, with more income for every club a huge step towards keeping the English Football League pyramid going strong.
In other West Brom news, a club director has told fans there have been talks over a takeover deal.
