Back in July, we reported from Spain that Aston Villa were the only real Premier League contenders for Joo Félix. It was also said that the forward did not want to transfer to Villa Park because he was focused on joining Barcelona.
On deadline day, the 23-year-old’s wish was granted as Atlético Madrid agreed to let him join the Camp Nou side on loan.
Former Atlético player Paulo Futre has now told Cadena Ser’s El Larguero that Aston Villa were the only English team interested in signing Félix during the last transfer window.
Futre, who spent two seasons at Real Madrid, was dissatisfied when the Portugal international publicly indicated in July that he would love to join Barcelona.
The 57-year-old has kept tight links with Felix’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and even contacted him when the player professed his enthusiasm for Barcelona. This is when the super-agent appears to have informed Futre of Aston Villa’s significant interest in Felix.
“When Joo said he wanted to play for Barça, I started living a nightmare that continues to this day.” “I called him [Mendes] and told him that Joo’s statements were his doing, and he said no,” he stated.
“We argued on the phone, and he said he had spoken with Manchester United.” I checked with my pals to confirm what he said, and it was correct. He afterwards spoke with Manchester City.
I also verified, and the 57-year-old has kept strong links with Felix’s agent Jorge Me.
