James Garner stood out amongst impressive team effort, he deserves to start

Garner’s versatility has seen him play in multiple positions since his move from Manchester United last summer, including right wing and right-back.

Indeed, the Birkenhead-born player has also been utilised in similar fashion on the international stage, playing right-back during the England U-21’s European Championships success in the summer.

However, Garner’s preferred role is in central midfield, with his keen eye for a pass an effective tool that Everton have yet to fully take advantage of.

His sharp range of passing was on full display against Brentford however, with the 22-year-old’s through ball to Dominic Calvert-Lewin helping to seal the win for the Toffees.

With the Blues 2-1 up with 20 minutes to go, Garner’s tenacity allowed him to win possession deep in the opposition’s half before playing a defence-splitting ball through to Calvert-Lewin who coolly finished to give Everton a two-goal advantage.

Indeed, it was a superb piece of individual skill that allowed DCL to run through on goal and it was a moment that will have no doubt caught the eye of Everton boss Sean Dyche.

It certainly impressed former player Alan Stubbs, and the former Toffee is not alone in thinking that James Garner has to play a key role for Everton this year.
