UPDATE NEWS: Norwich coach: senior player will miss ‘months’ with ankle injury

According to Norwich City head coach David Wagner, Josh Sargent is expected to miss “months rather than weeks” with an ankle injury sustained over the weekend.

Sargent injured his ankle while scoring the opening goal in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Huddersfield. The striker blocked a clearance from goalkeeper Lee Nicholls and as he jumped to head into the empty net, Nicholls followed, overtook him and landed on his ankle.

Speaking to the media after Tuesday’s win over Bristol City in the Carabao Cup, Wagner confirmed that Sargent will miss a significant part of the season.

“We don’t have clear information yet but what is certain is that this is a serious injury,” Wagner said. “So we’re talking more about months than weeks. We need to evaluate him further.

“He’s seeing another consultant and I think we’ll have a clearer picture by the end of the week about how many months he needs and whether he needs surgery, but it’s an injury. serious injury that we are dealing with.”

When asked if the injury was to Sargent’s ankle ligaments, Wagner replied:
“Exactly.”

The injury came as a blow to both club and player, with Sargent scoring three goals in four league matches to start the new campaign. This comes after a 13-goal campaign in the Championship last season.

Sargent could miss the U.S. men’s national team matches in September, October and November. The 23-year-old last played for the USMNT at the World Cup in Qatar, where he played all three group stage matches.
