That is the view of financial expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about how UEFA’s new regulations will benefit Man City financially.
The new Champions League format from 2024/25 means clubs will be ranked in the UEFA coefficient table based on their success in Europe over the past five years instead of 10.
After winning the tournament in 2023 and reaching the semi-finals and finals during this period, City are on track to claim top spot.

Under current rules, each position in the table is worth £1m, meaning the top team will earn £32m from the 32-team tournament.

The number of teams competing from the 2024/25 season increases to 36, UEFA also expects tournament revenue to increase. Maguire expects coefficient payments to still be worth more than £1m per position, meaning City could be guaranteed more than £36m in coefficient payments alone.

“Man City will be pleased with the changes to the results-focused UEFA coefficient over the last five years,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“They won the competition and were runners-up, so they are in a position where they will be the top-ranked team.” With the increase in prize money expected in the competition, this is already worth £1 million per ranking and this figure is set to increase.

“So being the top team means they are guaranteed £36 million in coefficient payments and I expect that figure to increase significantly in the 2024/25 season.”
