Kristjaan Speakman has revealed that Sunderland’s aim behind Elliot Embleton’s loan move to Derby County is to get the player regular minutes and stated that they will reassess his progress in January.
Speakman stated that Sunderland were not sure whether they would be able to provide Embleton with the necessary minutes he requires to get back to his former shape and revealed that the Black Cats decided a move to Derby would be best for his game time.
The Sunderland director of football also added that they will reassess his situation in January and decide on his future.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder played 23 times for Sunderland in the Championship last season until a ligament injury interrupted his season early.
Embleton has been loaned out by Sunderland to Derby County to work with Paul Warne as he recovers from his injury.
According to Speakman, “For Elliott, it is solely a rehabilitation program.”
“We weren’t 100% sure we could give him some time on the grass, but I think he needs to get some,” a staff member said. When the window closes, you have to make a choice, and perhaps we have chosen wisely by allowing him to go to Derby and allowing ourselves to examine the situation once more, take a look at the man in January, and decide what to do next.
Sunderland academy graduate Embleton will work hard to earn a spot in Derby County manager Warne’s starting lineup so he can play regularly.
The Rams are attempting to move up the League One table and are presently ranked eleventh. Embleton will be a key player in that effort.
