Southampton FC academy top defender signs first professional contract

The 19-year-old midfielder has attracted interest from a number of English clubs and is currently on trial at the Saints.

Gbadehan is looking to make an impression at Southampton and it looks like he has succeeded.
Russell Martin’s side will face Gbadehan on Wednesday in a closed friendly to test him more deeply.

The American, who holds a British passport, was tried in Brentford last week but it is Southampton who appear ready to sign him.
He plays for Future SC Monarchs, an American academy based in Maryland, where he won the Dallas Cup in 2021. Gbadehan will be hoping he can quickly make an impression at Southampton if he signs for the Championship club.
The Switzerland international – who has also been linked with moves to Southampton and Leicester this summer – has made 13 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring once.

Zeqiri’s contract expires in June next year and spent last season on loan in the Swiss top flight at FC Basel. He was also loaned to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga last season.
Technical director David Weir said: “Andi progressed well last season with Basel and now he is ready to play regularly somewhere long term. This is a great opportunity for Andi and we wish him the best of luck in the future.
The 24-year-old joined Albion from Lausanne for around £4m in October 2020, before playing nine times in the Premier League. He scored in a 2–0 win over Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup in August 2021.

He signed a three-year contract with Genk, with the option to extend for another year, and will wear the number 9 shirt.

However, Gbadehan did not decide to stay in the US at an MLS-affiliated academy but wanted to try his luck in Europe.
