UPDATED NEWS: Liverpool ‘have make £38m deal to sign wolves midfield as transfer deadline

Reported Liverpool target Matheus Nunes battles for the ball with Bruno Fernandes

According to reports, Liverpool is ‘exploring’ a deal to recruit Matheus Nunes from Wolves, a prior target for the midfield position.

Nunes joined Wanderers last summer for a club record amount, but he struggled to get going in the Premier League.

The midfielder, who was born in Brazil, had been in talks with the Reds for months before joining the Molineux team last summer. He had been connected with a number of major clubs at the time.

After two outstanding seasons with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester City was another team that was interested in signing the midfielder.

Nunes has occasionally demonstrated why Wolves spent almost £38 million to get him, but largely he has had trouble adjusting to the Premier League.

Having said that, he is only 24 and has plenty of time to succeed in England, and he might have that chance at Anfield.

The Telegraph reports that Liverpool is ‘exploring a deal’ to sign Nunes, and that is what is happening.

Jude Bellingham is reportedly the Reds’ top target in their desperate need to add midfielders.

Enzo Fernandez of Benfica has also been mentioned, but he is allegedly extremely close to joining Chelsea.

According to the article, Liverpool and Nunes had a ‘agreement’ and Liverpool was ‘near’ to signing Nunes last summer.

A deal is ‘very much alive this month’ after Liverpool ‘made a commitment to bid for him’.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could sign Nunes this month, but he would not join the squad until the end of the season.

Despite his slow start in the Premier League, it is said that Wolves would receive around £44m for their club-record signing.

This would fit Wolves’ model of signing a young player to sell for a profit. They previously sold Diogo Jota to Liverpool for around £40m, making a £30m profit.

Klopp is on the search for a new midfielder and will surely bring in someone in the winter transfer window. The Reds have already completed the signing of forward Cody Gakpo.

Bellingham is unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund this month, but a summer transfer seems likely given the interest shown by Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Every time Liverpool loses, an investigation into their present midfield possibilities is conducted.

On deadline day, midfielder Arthur Melo joined the team after Klopp reversed his previous statement that the club’s summer transfer business was over. The Brazilian has a long-term injury and has had difficulty getting into games.

Along with Nunes, Fernandez, and Bellingham, Liverpool has also been connected to Youri Tielemans of Leicester City, Declan Rice of West Ham, and Ibrahim Sangare of PSV.
