Leeds United are looking set for a £20million-plus transfer spree as the 49ers look likely to let the cash fly on three new additions in the coming days.

The Whites have been looking to add to their squad having lost several senior first-team players this summer and appear to be taking their interest to the next level with moves for Swansea striker Joel Piroe, Rangers maestro Glen Kamara and Genk man Joseph Paintsil on the cards.

Leeds have held a long-standing interest in Piroe and the Dutchman is now “increasingly likely” to depart South Wales this summer with Daniel Farke’s side working on a deal [Phil Hay, 23 August].

Piroe has been one of the most prolific strikers in the Championship for the Swans since joining the club finding the net 46 times in 96 appearances and would go a long way to solving the striker problem at Elland Road that has been apparent for several seasons.

Neither Patrick Bamford nor Georginio Rutter appear to be the right fit for the Whites as they aim for a return to the Premier League and a £10m deal has been mooted.

Kamara is viewed as a replacement for the outgoing Tyler Adams, and having been frozen out of the Rangers’ squad is likely available for a fee of £5.5m [Scottish Sun, 22 August] with Leeds “desperate” to secure the Finnish midfielder.

Leeds have needed strengthening in the middle of the park, even before Adams departed Elland Road. Even with Ethan Ampadu and Archie Gray impressing in the heart of midfield Farke needs more options, especially given Gray’s inexperience at only 17 years old, the Whites can’t afford to be too reliant on his services.

The third potential transfer in the Whites’ transfer spree looks likely to be Genk attacker Paintsil, with Sky Sports reporting on Tuesday (22 August) that the Ghanaian international is being monitored by Leeds.

Geek would require £8.5m to allow Painstil to depart Belgium this summer, which would take the trio of arrivals in Yorkshire all above £20m, on top of the additions of Ampadu and Darlow earlier this summer.

Promotion business

Although this latest spree feels like an expensive trio of deals for the Whites, it is the sort of business that needs to be completed by the 49ers this summer, if they have aspirations of returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The mass exodus at Elland Road has seen Farke left with an incredibly talented, but threadbare squad, with far too many holes in it to be considered a genuine promotion favourite this season, but that can easily be changed with a few additions.

Leeds United

Currently, the foundation of a competitive squad is present and the addition of the three aforementioned signings would add the sprinting of quality to the squad which could mean the Whites can kick-start their season.

Although most would have hoped for this sort of business to be completed before the start of the Championship campaign, the relatively indifferent results at the start of the season may have helped Farke and the 49ers identify the areas of weakness in the squad.

If Leeds can get these three deals over the line, they’ll become a much more threatening proposition in the Championship.
