In a move that’s being described as “the best news Roosters fans could dream of,” Sydney Roosters Head Coach Trent Robinson has officially announced that star fullback James Tedesco will be the club’s full-time Captain-Coach for the 2026 season — a role not seen in the modern era of the NRL.
The announcement was made during a surprise press conference at Allianz Stadium this morning, where Robinson appeared alongside Tedesco and Roosters Chairman Nick Politis.
“James is not only one of the best fullbacks the game has ever seen, he’s also a true leader — on and off the field,” Robinson said. “We believe in innovation, and this is about backing the culture we’ve built. Tedesco is the man to lead it.”
The news has sent shockwaves through the NRL community, with social media in a frenzy and fans flooding Roosters HQ with messages of support. It marks a historic moment, as no player has served as a captain-coach in the NRL era — a throwback to the league’s earliest days.
Tedesco, 32, who has captained both the Roosters and New South Wales Blues, appeared calm and focused as he addressed the media.
“It’s an honour. I’ve been part of this club for a long time now, and I love everything it stands for,” said Tedesco. “I’ve learned so much under Robbo. Now, I’m excited to lead this team into the next chapter — both on the field and in the locker room.”
Roosters fans are already buzzing about what this could mean for the 2026 season. Club merchandise featuring “CAPTAIN COACH TEDDY” sold out within hours online, and ticket sales for the season opener have spiked.
Rugby league legends have weighed in as well. Andrew Johns called it “a bold and brilliant move,” while Brad Fittler said it was “a sign of where the Roosters are heading — not just leading in talent, but in vision.”
While some critics have raised questions about whether the dual role will be too demanding, Robinson was quick to dismiss doubts.
“James has the work ethic, the respect of the squad, and the football IQ. We’re not just making a headline move. We’re building a legacy.”
Tedesco is expected to begin official coaching duties during the preseason camp in January 2026. He will continue in his fullback role while coordinating directly with the coaching staff — a hybrid leadership model never before trialled in the NRL.
