Magic the gathering has released the following statements regarding d…BREAKING: Magic: The Gathering Issues Official Statement Regarding Donuts
By Arcadia Vance – Gaming & Pastry Correspondent
In a move that has left players, bakers, and competitive eaters equally bewildered, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has issued a 1,200-word corporate statement regarding donuts and their “central importance to the future of Magic: The Gathering.” The announcement, published at 9:32 a.m. on Monday, was accompanied by a high-resolution photo of head designer Mark Rosewater holding a glazed cruller as though it were the fabled Black Lotus itself.
“We believe donuts are the untapped mana source of the modern age,” the statement begins, immediately setting the tone for what many are already calling “the most sugary controversy in TCG history.” According to WotC, the inspiration came during an early morning playtest session when a box of assorted pastries was placed in the middle of the table. One designer, reaching for a powdered jelly, reportedly exclaimed, “This is like drawing a perfect opening hand.” The rest, as they say, is history.
The Donut–Magic Connection
While critics have been quick to dismiss the move as a publicity stunt, Wizards insists the connection between donuts and Magic is both thematic and mechanical. In the press release, Rosewater outlines three key pillars of the “Donut Initiative”:
1. Flavor Synergy – Future Magic sets will incorporate more food-themed cards, with donuts taking center stage. Expect legendary creatures like Sprinkle Wurm, Glaze Elemental, and the much-rumored Ajani, Doughbringer.
2. Mechanic Innovation – A new keyword ability, Frosted, will be introduced in the 2026 core set. Cards with Frosted gain extra abilities when you are physically holding a donut while playing.
3. Community Engagement – Local game stores (LGS) will receive official “Donut Nights,” during which players are encouraged to bring and share donuts in exchange for promotional cards like Yeastbound Familiar and Goblin Pastry Chef.
“Magic has always been about flavor,” Rosewater said in a follow-up livestream. “We just decided to take that literally.”
The Limited Edition: Donuts of the Coast
Perhaps the most controversial part of the announcement is the unveiling of the Donuts of the Coast Collector Booster Box, a limited run of 10,000 units that includes:
12 booster packs scented like cinnamon sugar
One random foil “Secret Layer” donut card, such as Chocolate Sprinklorian or Boston Cream of Power
An edible, donut-shaped token with edible ink art
A coupon for a free coffee at participating game stores
The MSRP? A jaw-dropping $79.99. When questioned about the price, WotC’s statement simply read: “You can’t put a price on delicious nostalgia.”
Community Reactions – A Mixed Batch
Within hours, the Magic subreddit exploded into heated debate.
User Tap2Eat wrote: “This is everything I never knew I needed. If my win condition is a maple bar, I’m in.”
ManaSkeptic88 countered: “This is blatant product bloat. Next thing you know, they’ll be selling booster bags of bagels.”
Meanwhile, SpringleafPastrypod posted a 4,000-word theory linking donuts to hidden lore in Ravnica, claiming the Guild of Orzhov has been secretly controlling the interplanar pastry trade for centuries.
Competitive Play Concerns
The competitive scene is already asking tough questions. The new Frosted mechanic could create accessibility issues — particularly for players with gluten intolerance or those competing in events where sticky fingers are frowned upon.
“Are they going to check if you’re holding an actual donut in the finals of the Pro Tour?” asked Hall of Fame player Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa in a tongue-in-cheek tweet. “I’m not risking jelly filling on my playmat for +1/+1 counters.”
