Penrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary has voiced serious concern for young gun Blaize Talagi following a frightening incident during the Panthers’ heated clash against the Parramatta Eels on Saturday night.
The tense match, which saw both sides battle fiercely under the lights at CommBank Stadium, came to a halt late in the second half after Talagi was involved in a heavy collision that left players and fans momentarily silent.
Medical staff rushed onto the field as Talagi remained down, clutching his shoulder in visible pain. The 19-year-old utility back was eventually helped off the field and did not return to play.
Speaking after the game, Cleary didn’t hide his concern.
“Yeah, it’s definitely a worry,” the Panthers coach admitted. “He’s a tough kid, but that was a big hit. We’ll get him checked out properly, but right now our main focus is making sure he’s okay.”
The incident cast a shadow over what was otherwise a thrilling contest between two western Sydney rivals. Teammates rallied around the young star post-game, with several players posting supportive messages on social media.
Club officials have confirmed that Talagi will undergo scans in the coming days to determine the extent of the injury, with early reports suggesting it could be a shoulder or collarbone issue.
As the Panthers prepare for next week’s crucial fixture, Cleary and his coaching staff are hoping for positive news — but remain realistic.
“Blaize has been outstanding for us this season,” Cleary said. “Losing him, even for a short time, would be tough. But his health comes first.”
