In a stunning and celebratory move, Wisconsin Badgers Director of Athletics Chris McIntosh has officially announced that Ron Dayne, the legendary running back and 1999 Heisman Trophy winner, will return to the university in a leadership role as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Wisconsin Athletics.
The announcement came early this morning at a packed press conference at Camp Randall Stadium, where McIntosh was joined by Dayne and key university leadership to unveil the bold new chapter in Badgers history.
“Ron Dayne isn’t just a Wisconsin legend — he’s family,” said McIntosh. “This is more than a homecoming. Ron’s leadership, experience, and unwavering commitment to our student-athletes will elevate the entire athletic department.”
Dayne, widely regarded as one of the most iconic figures in college football history, set the NCAA Division I-A (now FBS) rushing record with over 7,000 career yards. His blend of power, humility, and fierce loyalty made him a fan favorite not only in Madison but nationwide.
“I’ve always believed in the power of Wisconsin — the people, the tradition, and the values we stand for,” Dayne said during his remarks. “This is my home. I’m honored to take on this role and help shape the future of Badger Athletics from the inside.”
A Strategic Shift
The move marks a strategic shift by the athletic department, aiming to reconnect with alumni, modernize operations, and continue building a championship culture across all sports. As COO, Dayne will oversee key initiatives in student-athlete development, alumni engagement, and NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) partnerships, while serving as a senior advisor to McIntosh.
“Ron knows what it takes to compete at the highest level — and more importantly, what it means to be a Badger,” McIntosh added.
Badger Nation Reacts
Social media lit up moments after the announcement, with fans and former teammates flooding platforms with messages of support and excitement. The hashtag #DayneReturns trended nationwide within the hour.
Former Wisconsin quarterback Brooks Bollinger tweeted, “Couldn’t be happier for my brother @RonDayne33. Wisconsin just got a whole lot stronger.”
What’s Next?
Dayne will officially begin his tenure in November, kicking off with a university-wide listening tour and a keynote address during Homecoming Weekend. Sources say he’ll also be heavily involved in the upcoming renovations to Camp Randall and the student-athlete performance centerfurther?
