In a stunning and unexpected move, the Florida Panthers organization has announced that Roberto Luongo, one of the most beloved figures in franchise history, has been appointed as the team’s new Chief Operating Officer (COO).

The announcement came early Sunday morning through an official team statement, catching both fans and insiders off guard. The decision reportedly came directly from team owner Vincent Viola, following a series of high-level executive meetings over the past week.

“Roberto represents everything the Florida Panthers stand for — leadership, integrity, and a relentless commitment to excellence,” Viola said in the press release. “His passion for the game and his deep understanding of this organization make him the perfect person to help lead us into the next era.”

Luongo, 46, retired in 2019 after a Hall of Fame–caliber career that included over 1,000 NHL games and multiple All-Star appearances. Since retiring, he has worked in hockey operations and player development, most recently serving as Special Advisor to the General Manager.

Panthers Players and Fans React

News of Luongo’s promotion spread quickly across social media, with current and former players expressing both surprise and excitement.

Captain Aleksander Barkov commented,

“Nobody loves this team more than Lu. He’s been part of our culture since day one. We’re all thrilled to see him take on this new role.”

Fans outside Amerant Bank Arena gathered to celebrate the announcement, many wearing Luongo jerseys and chanting his name as local reporters covered the scene live.

A New Era in Sunrise

According to sources within the organization, Luongo’s responsibilities will include overseeing hockey operations, player development, and community outreach initiatives. His appointment is seen as a move to strengthen ties between the team’s front office and its fanbase.

The Panthers, who reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2023 and have remained perennial contenders, are reportedly looking to build long-term stability both on and off the ice.

“This isn’t just a business decision,” said one team insider. “It’s about legacy. Luongo is the Panthers.”
