The Wisconsin Badgers women’s volleyball community is buzzing with excitement today after the official announcement that former head coach Pete Waite is returning to the program — this time as part of the senior coaching staff.

Waite, who led the Badgers from 1999 to 2012, is one of the most respected figures in Wisconsin volleyball history. Under his leadership, the Badgers captured two Big Ten titles, made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, and earned a national runner-up finish in 2000.

The news broke earlier this afternoon when the University of Wisconsin Athletics Department released a statement confirming Waite’s return. According to the announcement, Waite will serve as a Senior Coaching Advisor, providing mentorship, technical guidance, and program development insight for both players and coaches.

“It feels like coming home,” said Waite in an interview at the UW Field House. “I’ve always believed in the spirit and drive of this program. To be back here, working with a new generation of Badgers, is truly special.”

Current head coach Kelly Sheffield welcomed the move, calling Waite’s addition a “game-changer” for the program’s continued success.
