In a move that no one saw coming, Collingwood Football Club’s star medium defender Josh Daicos has left fans reeling — and head coach Craig McRae completely lost for words — following a jaw-dropping personal announcement made during a post-training press conference this morning.
With the Magpies preparing for what could be a defining run into the finals, Daicos called a surprise media gathering at the Holden Centre. Dressed in his training kit and flanked by teammates, he took the mic and delivered his message with a grin:
“After a lot of thinking… and after spending one too many hours on MasterChef Australia, I’ve decided it’s time to follow my true passion — cooking. I’ll be hanging up the boots at the end of the season to launch my food truck, Daicos & Dips.”
The room reportedly fell silent.
Coach Craig McRae, standing behind Daicos, looked stunned and reportedly muttered, “You’ve got to be joking,” before walking off, visibly confused.
Daicos, who has played 120 games and become a fan favourite for his dazzling runs off half-back, insists he’s not leaving due to injury or burnout — just a burning desire to “serve gourmet dips and toasted Turkish rolls to the people of Melbourne.”
Social media exploded within minutes. Collingwood fans flooded X (formerly Twitter) with messages ranging from “Say it ain’t so!” to “Put that hummus on the bench and get back to training.”
The AFL has declined to comment at this stage, though a league insider says “this is a first… but stranger things have happened.
