The former NBA star, affectionately known as “The Truth,” revealed the initiative during a press conference on Wednesday morning, standing in front of the very property that will be transformed into a safe haven for young people experiencing homelessness.

“This is bigger than basketball,” Pierce said. “Growing up in Inglewood, I saw firsthand how easy it is for kids to fall through the cracks. I was lucky to have mentors and coaches who believed in me. Not everyone gets that chance. This shelter is about giving those kids hope, support, and a second chance at life.”

A Legacy of Giving Back

Pierce, who played 15 seasons with the Boston Celtics and was a key figure in their 2008 NBA Championship win, has long been active in philanthropy. Through his Truth Fund, launched in 2002, he has supported various causes related to education, health, and youth development. However, this latest investment marks his largest personal donation to date and reflects a deepened commitment to addressing homelessness — a crisis that continues to grow in Los Angeles and across the U.S.

According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), over 4,600 unaccompanied youth were counted as homeless in LA County during the most recent point-in-time count, many of them fleeing abuse, aging out of foster care, or facing family rejection due to their identity.

“Paul’s investment isn’t just financial — it’s deeply personal,” said Maritza Lopez, director of the Youth Rebound Project, which will operate the facility in partnership with Pierce’s foundation. “He’s not just writing a check. He’s helping design the programs, mentoring youth, and planning to be actively involved.”

What the Shelter Will Offer

The shelter, named “The Truth House,” is set to open its doors by the spring of 2026. It will provide 24-hour housing for up to 50 youth between the ages of 16 and 24. In addition to safe lodging, the center will offer wraparound services.

A full-time staff of social workers, career counselors, and educators will work on-site. Pierce also hinted at plans to install a basketball court and creative arts center, saying, “Healing comes in many forms — sometimes it’s through music, movement, or just feeling part of a team.”

Community Reaction and Praise

Local leaders and community activists have widely praised Pierce’s efforts. City Councilmember Karen Price called it “a game-changing moment for South LA,” noting the shelter would provide vital services in an area often overlooked in terms of infrastructure and investment.

“Paul Pierce is showing what real leadership looks like,” said Price. “This is about lifting up our youth, investing in their future, and breaking cycles of poverty and trauma.”

Looking Ahead

Pierce says this is just the beginning. He’s in discussions to replicate the shelter model in other cities, including Boston and Chicago. “Every city has kids who are just trying to survive,” he said. “I want them to know someone sees them, someone believes in them.”

As a basketball icon, Pierce is used to inspiring fans with buzzer-beaters and championship grit. Now, off the court, he’s proving that his most meaningful legacy might be one of compassion, community, and truth.
