LIVE NEWS: Jurgen Klopp’s words and the truth about the ‘£100m’ in Liverpool’s transfer purse….
Liverpool owners FSG had committed to a major £111m deal for Moises Caicedo before it collapsed
After Liverpool failed in their bid to land Moises Caicedo attention understandably turned to where the £111m that was bid could be deployed to.
Having been often criticised for a perceived lack of willingness to engage in major transfer spend compared to their rivals, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group gave the green light for the Reds to pursue what would have been a British transfer record deal for the 21-year–old Ecuadorian, who had shone in his first full season in the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion last season.
It wasn’t to be, however, as Chelsea refused to be beaten when it came to their long-standing interest in the player, working the numbers over a fraught weekend before officially lodging a £115m bid that would be enough to get the deal over the line, with Caicedo having indicated his preference to head to West London instead of Merseyside.
A move for Romeo Lavia at a £60m valuation fell through in the aftermath of Caicedo, with Chelsea once again stymying Liverpool in their efforts to add to quality and youth to their midfield ranks after something of an exodus during the summer in terms of their options in the middle of the park.

The window closes at the end of this month and one new face did arrive, 30-year-old Japanese defensive midfielder Wataru Endo from German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart on a four-year deal for a little over £16m. More additions are hoped for over the course of the next week, but the question has been asked “where is the Caicedo money, John?”
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp touched on suggestions that there was an obvious pot of money sitting there just waiting to be spent when he spoke to the assembled media earlier this week.
