‘He’s the one,’ claim two former Wolves players, who believe O’Neil should start the next game in place of suspended Nunes.
Former Wolves defenders Lee Naylor and Andy Thompson both believes Hwang Hee-chan should be chosen to replace the suspended Matheus Nunes against Everton.
The Portugal international received his marching orders at the end of the Brighton game, after pushing two players out of frustration.
Nunes let his frustrations get the better of him, and was shown a second yellow card.
Nunes will now miss the huge game with Everton this weekend.
It’s a big blow, but Wolves do have a few potential options to replace the 24-year-old.
And in the eyes of Naylor and Thompson, Gary O’Neil should not look past Hwang…
Naylor and Thompson are Team Hwang following Nunes sending off
After the game, Naylor and Thompson discussed Nunes’ sending off on the Wolves Weekly podcast.
Both criticised the former Sporting CP maestro, saying he has let the team down.
Him being unavailable is far from ideal.
But asked who should come in as his replacement, Naylor and Thompson were in no doubt that it should be Hwang.
Naylor said: “I think you’ve got to go Hwang. He’s the one that stands out for me. He came on against Brighton and made a bit of a difference. He injected a bit of life into us.
Thompson added: “I’d put Hwang in. At the end of the day, he looked lively. He got the goal. We said before the season that we thought it was going to be a big season for Hwang. He’s got an opportunity now with the suspension. He’s got to take it with both hands.”
Dave Edwards was also impressed with Hwang’s cameo against Brighton.
A golden chance for Hwang
It would be a real shock if O’Neil did not bring in Hwang as Nunes’ replacement.
Nunes has obviously been playing out wide and drifting inside, so Hwang is surely a prime candidate to come in now. But he would obviously stay wider than Nunes.
He deserves a chance.
The £14 million star has looked one of the sharpest players for Wolves for weeks, and is probably the biggest goalscoring threat right now for Wolves.
Hopefully he gets the nod from O’Neil against Everton.
