Liverpool are still working on signing a left-sided centre-back before the window shuts, sources have told Football Insider.

Jurgen Klopp wants cover and competition for Virgil van Dijk while he is also keen to refresh the central defensive position for the first time since Ibrahima Konate’s arrival.

Football Insider revealed last week (19 August) that Torino’s Per Schuurs, 23, is on the radar of Liverpool’s recruitment team and he was watched by scouts in his team’s Serie A draw against Cagliari on Monday night.

Liverpool have a budget set aside for a new centre-back but won’t commit the same sort of funds they are willing to pay for a central midfielder.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (18 August) that the Reds are ready to prioritise a deal for a left-sided centre-back after completing the signing of defensive midfielder Wataru Endo from Stuttgart.

Schuurs, is seen as a realistically priced option for the Merseysiders and could cost around £30million.

Sources have told Football Insider that Reds captain and fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk is “well aware” of the 23-year-old’s talents and is a “big fan” of the defender.

Schuurs’ current contract at Torino runs until 2026 after joining from Ajax last summer where he won three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cups during his four years at the club.

The Dutchman made 36 appearances for the Serie A side last season and netted one goal and offered up two assists in those outings.

Borussia Monchengladbach manager Roland Virkus insists it would take an “immense offer” for the club to consider selling LIVERPOOL target Manu Kone this summer.

Speculation surrounding the France U21 international has accelerated in the last few weeks after reports of the Reds inquiring about the 22-year-old.

Liverpool were previously quoted between €40m to €45m (£34m to £38m) and recent reports have claimed that they have already contacted the former Toulouse midfielder’s management over their interest.

Kone is one of the midfielders the Reds have been linked with this summer and although their interest has wavered in recent weeks, they may now reignite their interest as they look to get a few late deals done.

Back in Germany, speaking to Bild, Virkus insisted the Bundesliga outfit are under no pressure to sell one of their most-prized assets before the September 1 deadline as they look to build on last season’s 10th-place finish.

“We don’t have to sell him,” said Virkus. “But it was always like this: if there is another immense offer, then we have to think about it. But that’s not the plan. Our plan is to keep Kone.
