The outlet reported on its website (22 August) that the 21-year-old had been the subject of discussions between the Robins and the Baggies as Nigel Pearson’s side look to bolster their defence.

Gardner-Hickman featured for West Brom in their recent 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Friday (18 August) after he replaced Jed Wallace in the 86th minute with his contract running until 2026.

West Brom’s season has not started as intended as defensive issues continue to be a problem for Carlos Corberan’s side in the Championship.

With finances tights and personnel minimal, selling a young and high-potential asset is probably not in the Baggies’ best interest at the moment.

The academy graduate is ready to work hard for this club and has praised his boss in the past for the demands he sets for the squad.

As quoted by the Express and Star (22 July), Gardner-Hickman said: “I’m just enjoying learning off the gaffer, the senior lads, it’s really helping me having a full pre-season with everyone.

“He has high demands and it’s very good as a young player especially coming through. You know you can’t rest and you can’t get complacent for a minute, so that’s really good. Some of the stuff I’ve learned off him already can take my game to the next level.”

The England under-20 player clearly sees a good path of development at West Brom under the Spaniard, so remaining at the club would benefit him.

He can also boast some impressive stats that show why he is worth keeping at the Hawthorns, with 2.99 tackles per 90 (90th percentile) and 1.61 clearances per 90 (81st percentile). [FBRef]

If Corberan can continue to develop the youngster into a quality centre-back, then the Hawthorns faithful will not wish to see him depart the club, especially considering he joined the club aged seven.
