Sunderland transfer latest as Cats chase striker deal plus team news ahead of Rotherham United fixture

Tony Mowbray’s pre-match press conference ahead of Sunderland’s Championship fixture against Rotherham United.

Sunderland are preparing to face Rotherham United in the Championship – with Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray set to hold his pre-match press conference today.

The Black Cats will be looking to bounce back following back-to-back league defeats against Ipswich and Preston, with both games finishing 2-1.

Sunderland are still looking to strengthen before the end of this summer’s transfer window, particularly up front, while there could also be departures on Wearside in the coming weeks.

We’ll have live updates from the Academy of Light as Mowbray spoke to the media:

Sunderland are advertising for a new U18 lead coach with Adam Asghar expected to join Southampton. The highly-rated 29-year-old – whose playing career included spells at Dumbarton, Alloa Athletic, East Stirlingshire and Annan Athletic – is set to join the Black Cats’ Championship rivals less than a year after he arrived at the club from Dundee United.

Under Asghar, Sunderland’s U18 side finished runners-up in the Northern Section of the U18 Premier League, behind Manchester City. And with reputation on the rise, he has understood to make the next step in his career by becoming Southampton’s new U21 coach.

The Saints were looking for a replacement for Dave Horseman, who led their U21 side to the Premier League 2 Division Two title last season, after he was appointed head coach at League Two Forest Green Rovers over the summer. Southampton appointed Darren Mowbray – brother of Sunderland head coach Tony – as their head of recruitment last month, and he will have been involved in the process that saw Asghar identified as the man to replace Horseman.

Asghar’s departure from Sunderland has not yet been announced but the Black Cats are already planning ahead, with an advertisement for a new U18 lead professional development coach running on the club’s official website. The U18 Premier League campaign kicked off last weekend, with Sunderland’s youngsters securing a 1-1 draw against Derby County at the Academy of Light last Saturday.

They are in action again this weekend, when they travel to face Blackburn Rovers U18s at the Lancashire side’s Brockhall training complex on Saturday.
