Leeds United is waiting for Everton to make a higher offer than the £25million bid already submitted for wantaway star Willy Gnonto, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Italian outlet published in their print edition (17 August, pg 19) that the 19-year-old wants to leave the club and trains alone with Luis Sinisterra, but the Toffees must increase their bid if they want to secure the winger after the Whites rejected a £25million bid.

Sky Sports reported (16 August, 15:38) on their live transfer blog that Sean Dyche’s side had made a £25million bid for Gnonto, but this fresh report suggests they may have to go back in.

On and on

Everton fans will be frustrated by the slow pace of this transfer. While Leeds are within their right to command a high fee for Gnonto, £25million seems fair for a player with one season and two goals in the Premier League.

The Toffees will be buying Gnonto based on potential too, having already cracked his way into the senior Italy men’s side and shown real signs of excellence last season.

Everton are not interested in signing Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy despite reports linking them with a move, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

Writing on their official website (16 August), the news outlet report that suggestions the club want to sign the one-time England international are wide of the mark.

‘Everton are not currently pursuing a move for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy,” they wrote.

“A report in the Evening Standard claimed that McCarthy, who is on £50,000-a-week wages at the Saints, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, was attracting interest from the Blues and Crystal Palace after negotiations broke down over a proposed switch to newly-promoted Luton Town.

“However, the ECHO understands that the 33-year-old is not an Everton target.”
