Huddersfield Town transfer needs highlighted again amid Delano Burgzorg link
The Terriers got into good positions against both Plymouth and Leicester in their first two games of the new season but lacked the final action to turn it into a goal
The Terriers had more than their share of territory around the opposition box against both Plymouth Argyle and Leicester City but were unable to turn that into goals, with Michal Helik’s goal following a set piece down in Devon on the opening day the only time they have found the net across their two Championship openers.
That only highlighted what we already knew. Huddersfield Town’s need for new additions to the front line is well-acknowledged, and the club have this week been connected with a move for maverick Mainz forward Delano Burgzorg – with manager Neil Warnock also acknowledging in recent weeks that he would like to add another midfielder.
Naturally, those transfer needs came up in our analysis of those first two Championship games on our podcast Ooh To Be A Terrier, with our own Terriers writer Steven Chicken joined as usual by Opta analyst David Hartrick.
What follows is a transcript of the discussion we had on the topic. You can subscribe to the podcast via Apple Podcasts, on Spotify,or wherever you get your podcasts by searching for “Ooh To Be A Terrier” – or click here to listen to or download the latest episode directly.

Hartrick: “I just think a really good eight who can pick those passes and really make the most of the possession you have is the sort of difference maker. It’s alright people turning on Danny Ward and having a go at Danny Ward because he’s in the striking position, but we’re back in that point where he gets so few chances again, that every single one becomes absolutely massive.
“What I’d like to see is Town actually generating more chances. Take Danny Ward out of the equation, put who you want up there, put Michal Helik up there if you want…but I just want to see them generate some more chances, because they’ve got Thomas, Koroma and Diarra who all get in really good position – but it just kinda needs that link, that extra something just to knit it together and turn it into balls cut back from the byline or late runs into the box, et cetera.”
Chicken: “They’re very good at carrying the ball. I think you’d say between Headley, Rudoni, Diarra, Thomas, Koroma, [Kasumu as well]…they’ve got a lot of players who are very good at driving the ball forward, [but] I don’t think you’d particularly pick out any of them as being the one to play the final ball.
“I think they would like that to be Sorba Thomas, but he’s adapting his game at the moment as well. Whatever you think of Sorba Thomas, he told us in the summer Neil Warnock wants him to come inside more often rather than going outside. I thought he was good against Leicester, but I think you can see in certain moments that that is not entirely within his nature – like he’s almost like he’s taken a moment to go ‘oh, no, I’m not going outside. I’m coming inside now’. That’s going to take a bit of time.
“But I think there were times, to be fair, in that game against Leicester, where Danny Ward was making dummy runs to make space for others, where you sort of think ‘I kind of want you to make that run, actually’.
