Despite the delay, Sandro Tonali will become a Newcastle United player this week and it’s not just the fans who are excited by the move with Anthony Gordon giving his view on the signing.

Currently on international duty with the England U21s, Anthony Gordon, who will be looking to face Portugal in the U21s European Championships quarter final this afternoon, has now spoken about Newcastle‘s big signing.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Portugal clash, Gordon was asked about Tonali saying (via The Chronicle): “I knew him from his early days at Brescia. I remember seeing some clips of him before he went to [AC] Milan.

Anthony Gordon believes Tonali is one of the top midfielders in the world

“He has excelled and is one of the top midfielders in the world. It shows the direction we [Newcastle United] are going in. I’m really looking forward to playing with him.”

Tonali was with the Italy U21s in the European Championships but the Italians were knocked out in the group stage by virtue of goals scored. It was believed then that he’d be Newcastle-bound to get the deal all wrapped up.

At first he was expected (mostly by fans) to be in Newcastle a day or two after the Italians were knocked out of the competition, then it was thought he’d be here this weekend and the announcement would soon follow but now it looks likely it will be Wednesday before he touches down in Tyneside.

The two Under 21 internationals could form a great partnership at Newcastle

There aren’t said to be any issues with the deal so when he arrives everything should go smoothly and Newcastle fans can start to look forward to seeing him play.

‘Electric‘ winger Anthony Gordon already seems to be looking forward to it and sounds like he’s a big fan of Tonali.

I said yesterday that Gordon is looking like he will be coming out next season all guns blazing so I don’t expect the £45million January signing will have to wait long to realise his dream of playing alongside Tonali.
