West Ham about to complete first of six new signings before 11pm today
West Ham United hope to sign five more players before deadline day as their move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez nears completion, according to 90min.
The website reported (7 August) that the Hammers wish to make half a dozen new signings including Alvarez who is set to make the £34million switch to his desired Premier League.
Fabrizio Romano tweeted on Monday (7 August) that the Mexican is set to fly to London for a medical after reaching a verbal agreement with Ajax, but the Irons plan on keeping busy before the window shuts.
Hopeful
This news should give West Ham fans something to be optimistic about. Alvarez looks to be a quality addition for a good-looking fee and David Moyes will hope he can help fill the Declan Rice-shaped void in the midfield.
But before this news things were looking quite bleak at the London Stadium, with no official senior signings following Rice’s departure.
While this was not from a lack of trying on West Ham’s part. The continual saga of James Ward-Prowse’s move to West Ham is still unresolved, with Sky Sports reporting on Wednesday (2 August) that the Hammers may consider other options after Southampton rejected £30million for the midfielder.
Elsewhere, the Daily Mail reported on Friday (4 August) that David Moyes could face the sack amid tensions between the West Ham hierarchy and failed attempts to sign Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay.
West Ham will likely target a new striker, with Gianluca Scamacca’s move to Serie A side Atalanta set to be announced soon, according to Foot Mercato, and will look to continue to improve their midfield.
However, West Ham are not out of the clear just yet. Plenty still needs to be done behind the scenes to get the side up to scratch before the start of the season, and things will need to improve on the pitch if the Hammers want a stronger league campaign.
In other West Ham news, Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth claims that the Hammers will now target a new midfielder after Alvarez.
