DEAL ACCEPTED: Aston Villa Captain John McGinn Completes Blockbuster Transfer to Atlético Madrid
Aston Villa captain John McGinn has reportedly completed a sensational move to Spanish giants Atlético Madrid after both clubs reached a full agreement over a summer transfer.
The Scotland international is understood to have signed a four-year contract after successful negotiations, bringing an end to his outstanding spell at Villa Park. McGinn leaves Aston Villa as one of the club’s modern icons, having led the team as captain and played a key role in their rise in both the Premier League and European competitions.
Atlético Madrid identified the 30-year-old midfielder as a priority target due to his leadership, tireless work rate, versatility, and ability to influence matches in both attack and defence. Manager Diego Simeone is believed to have personally approved the move, viewing McGinn as the perfect fit for his high-intensity style of play.
Speaking after completing the transfer, McGinn expressed mixed emotions.
“Leaving Aston Villa is one of the toughest decisions of my career. The club and its supporters have given me unforgettable memories, and I’ll always be grateful. I’m excited by this new challenge and can’t wait to begin my journey with Atlético Madrid.”
Villa supporters have taken to social media to thank their captain for his years of commitment, while Atlético fans have welcomed the experienced midfielder ahead of the new season.
The clubs are expected to officially confirm the transfer after the completion of all remaining formalities, with McGinn set to be unveiled at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium later this week.
