Liverpool are not giving up on signing Romeo Lavia, according to reports, and this week is crucial with the Premier League season set to kick off.
The season starts this weekend with a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on the cards for Jurgen Klopp’s side although many questions linger over this summer’s transfer activity.
Several midfielders have either been sold or released while Liverpool have only signed two midfielders so far.
Romeo Lavia is surely destined to be the third but the lack of ambition and authority displayed so far has fans worried.
What’s the latest on Romeo Lavia to Liverpool?
Liverpool have had two bids rejected for the 19-year-old. Their first offer was a derisory £34m plus (plus £4m in add-ons) before being turned away a second time with a £42m offer.
Dutch outlet HLN claims that a third offer has yet to be made but “the Reds are not giving up on Lavia.” They must pay €60m (£51m) otherwise they will be turned away again.
They state that the 19-year-old “really wants to go to Anfield” as a third bid is prepared by Liverpool. According to Fabrizio Romano, they will make a third bid (and perhaps a fourth) but the clock is ticking.
The Belgian, who shone in a deep midfield role for Southampton last season, is not enough to cover Liverpool’s bases this summer which is why it’s encouraging to hear that talks are underway for Fluminense midfielder Andre.
Liverpool are around three signings short of having ideal squad depth with two midfielders and a centre-back needed. Given the slow pace on interest in Lavia, it would be prudent to take this with a pinch of salt.
It’s also unrealistic to expect Liverpool to sign Lavia this week unless a major breakthrough is reached. That said, it does seem as though he will end up at Anfield although it also remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool cave and meet Southampton’s £50m.
