Rugby league fans across Queensland are in a frenzy tonight as news breaks that legendary coach Wayne Bennett is officially returning to the Brisbane Broncos — the club where his coaching legacy first took flight.
In a stunning development confirmed late Wednesday afternoon, the Broncos organization announced that Bennett will be rejoining the team as Senior Coaching Advisor, marking a historic reunion between the 75-year-old mentor and the club he helped transform into an NRL powerhouse.
Crowds gathered outside Suncorp Stadium as word spread, with fans donning vintage Broncos jerseys and chanting Bennett’s name. Social media erupted within minutes of the announcement, with hashtags like #WelcomeHomeWayne and #BroncosLegendReturns trending nationwide.
Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy said the decision was part of a broader plan to strengthen the club’s coaching structure heading into the 2026 season.
“Wayne’s experience, leadership, and connection to this club are unmatched,” Donaghy said. “Having him back in the Broncos family is not just symbolic — it’s strategic. He knows what it takes to win.”
Bennett, who famously guided the Broncos to six premiership titles between 1992 and 2006, said he was “humbled” to be back where it all began.
“This club has always been home,” Bennett told reporters. “I’m not here to take over — I’m here to support, to guide, and to make sure the Broncos stay true to what we stand for.”
Current head coach Kevin Walters, one of Bennett’s former players, welcomed the move, calling it “a massive boost for the entire organization.”
“Wayne’s presence alone lifts the standard,” Walters said. “He’s a mentor to me, and to have him involved again — it’s special.”
Fans can expect Bennett to officially step into his advisory role next week, with reports suggesting he’ll also assist in mentoring the club’s emerging coaching staff and developing junior talent.
