In a monumental development for the NRL powerhouse, Melbourne Storm Chairman Matt Tripp and his family have officially confirmed that Cameron Smith, the legendary former hooker and one of the most decorated players in rugby league history, will return to the club in 2025 as Director of Football.

The announcement was made earlier this morning at AAMI Park, where Tripp described the move as a “homecoming for the ages.”

“Cameron is Melbourne Storm,” said Tripp. “He embodies everything our club stands for — excellence, humility, and relentless competitiveness. Having him back in an official capacity is a huge moment for our organisation, our players, and our fans.”

Smith, who retired from playing in 2021 after an illustrious career spanning more than 400 NRL games — all with the Storm — is expected to oversee football operations, player development, and long-term strategy alongside head coach Craig Bellamy, who recently extended his coaching tenure through 2026.

“It just feels right,” said Smith at the press conference. “Melbourne has always been home. I’ve stayed close to the club and to Craig, and I’m thrilled to contribute in a way that helps the next generation of Storm players reach their potential.”

Insiders suggest that Smith’s return has been in the works for several months, with key figures including General Manager Frank Ponissi and senior players said to be “over the moon” about the decision.

Bellamy, who coached Smith for nearly two decades, called the appointment “the best news the Storm could get heading into 2025.”

“Cam knows what success looks like — he lived it. To have that experience back in the building every day will make us better, plain and simple,” Bellamy said.

Fans have flooded social media with excitement, with hashtags #CameronSmithReturns and #StormForever trending within hours of the announcement.

The Storm are set to officially unveil Smith in his new role during a public event at Federation Square next week, where he will address fans and outline his vision for the club’s future.
