In a monumental announcement that has electrified the rugby league community, Manly Sea Eagles owner Scott Penn and his family have officially confirmed that club legend Cliff Lyons will return to the organization in 2025 as Chief Operating Officer.

The decision marks one of the most significant off-field appointments in the club’s modern history, bringing back one of its most beloved icons to a leadership role that will oversee football operations, player development, and community engagement.

“Cliffy isn’t just a former player — he is Manly,” said Penn during a press conference at 4 Pines Park. “His leadership, knowledge of the game, and connection to our culture make him the perfect person to help guide the Sea Eagles into a new era.”

Lyons, affectionately known as ‘Cliffy’, played 309 first-grade games for Manly between 1986 and 1999, capturing two premierships (1987 and 1996), two Dally M Medals, and a reputation as one of the most creative five-eighths in rugby league history.

Now, more than two decades after hanging up the boots, Lyons is set to bring his trademark vision and calm authority to the club’s executive suite.

“Manly has always been home,” said Lyons. “I’ve stayed close to the club over the years, but this opportunity feels right. It’s about giving back and helping shape the next generation of Sea Eagles.”

Sources close to the organization say Lyons has already begun informal discussions with coaching staff and senior players, emphasizing a return to the “gritty, fearless Manly DNA” that defined the club’s greatest eras.

The announcement comes amid a broader restructuring of the Sea Eagles’ front office, aimed at re-establishing Manly as a powerhouse both on and off the field. Lyons’ appointment is expected to take effect immediately following the conclusion of the 2025 preseason.

Fans have flooded social media with excitement, with hashtags like #WelcomeBackCliffy and #ManlyForever trending across X (formerly Twitter) within hours of the news breaking.

As the Sea Eagles look toward the 2025 NRL season, one thing is clear: the spirit of the Northern Beaches is alive and well — and with Cliff Lyons back in the fold, the sky’s the limit.
