In a monumental announcement that has electrified the hockey world, Winnipeg Jets chairman Mark Chipman and his family have officially confirmed that Dale Hawerchuk, the legendary captain and long-time face of the franchise, will return to the organization in 2025 as the Director of Ice Hockey Operations.

The news marks a historic full-circle moment for both the Jets and their devoted fan base. Hawerchuk, who defined an era of Winnipeg hockey through the 1980s and early 1990s, is widely regarded as one of the most talented and influential players to ever wear the Jets jersey.

“This isn’t just about hockey — it’s about homecoming, legacy, and leadership,” said Chairman Mark Chipman during today’s press conference. “Dale’s influence on this franchise, this city, and the sport itself is immeasurable. We’re thrilled to welcome him back to the Jets family in an official capacity.”

A Legendary Return

Hawerchuk’s return carries emotional significance. Having served as the Jets’ captain and franchise cornerstone for nearly a decade, he recorded over 900 points in a Winnipeg uniform and earned a reputation as one of the purest playmakers of his generation. After his playing career, Hawerchuk transitioned into coaching, notably leading the Barrie Colts in the OHL for several successful seasons.

Now, as Director of Ice Hockey Operations, Hawerchuk is expected to oversee player development, scouting strategies, and the future direction of the Jets’ hockey programs — a role that will put his deep understanding of the game to use in shaping the team’s next era.

A New Chapter for the Jets

The announcement comes as the Jets aim to reestablish themselves as a powerhouse in the NHL’s Western Conference. With young stars rising and a dedicated fan base behind them, the addition of Hawerchuk’s vision and leadership is seen as a major step forward.

“It feels right,” Hawerchuk said, addressing the media with visible emotion. “Winnipeg has always been home to me. I can’t wait to contribute to building the next generation of Jets hockey.”

Fans across Manitoba and beyond have already flooded social media with messages of support, celebrating the return of a beloved icon to the city that cheered him on from the very start.

About Dale Hawerchuk:
A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Hawerchuk played 16 NHL seasons, including nine with the original Winnipeg Jets. Known for his vision, skill, and leadership, he remains one of the franchise’s most celebrated figures and a symbol of Jets pride.
