In a remarkable act of generosity, Jack Gibson, star forward for the Sydney Roosters, has invested $3.6 million to convert a historic Sydney property into a shelter for homeless youth. The initiative comes after Gibson witnessed firsthand the growing homelessness crisis affecting young Australians across major cities.

The property, located in inner-west Sydney, will be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility offering emergency accommodation, mental health support, education programs, and job training for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 25. Construction and refurbishment are expected to begin early next year, with the shelter set to open its doors by mid-2026.

Speaking at a press conference outside the Roosters’ headquarters, Gibson said the decision was inspired by his own encounters with disadvantaged youth during community outreach events.

“I’ve met too many young people who just needed a safe place to sleep and someone to believe in them,” Gibson said. “Rugby league has given me everything — now it’s time to give something real back.”

The project, named “The Gibson House”, will operate in partnership with Youth Off The Streets and Mission Australia, ensuring professional oversight and long-term sustainability. The facility will accommodate up to 40 young residents at a time and include recreational spaces, study areas, and counseling rooms.

Sydney Roosters CEO Nick Politis praised Gibson’s initiative, calling it “a game-changing gesture that reflects the true spirit of leadership, both on and off the field.”

Australia’s youth homelessness problem has escalated in recent years, with recent data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showing over 28,000 young people experiencing homelessness each night. Gibson’s contribution is being hailed as a beacon of hope for a community in urgent need of support.

Local government officials have also expressed their backing. The New South Wales Minister for Housing, Sarah Nguyen, confirmed that the state would provide additional funding and logistical support to help fast-track the project’s completion.

“Jack’s commitment shows what can be achieved when compassion meets action,” Nguyen said. “This shelter will change lives — and hopefully inspire others to follow his lead.”

For now, the rugby league star remains focused on both his team’s NRL campaign and ensuring that his vision for The Gibson House becomes a lasting legacy beyond the playing field.
