In a stunning and emotional press conference at Allianz Stadium this morning, Sydney Roosters head coach Trent Robinson officially handed in his resignation letter, ending a celebrated 12-year reign that brought the club three Premiership titles and a new era of professionalism.
The announcement sent shockwaves through the NRL community, but what truly stunned fans and media alike was the cryptic and unexpected twist Robinson added at the end of his speech.
“It’s time for a new chapter – not just for me, but for this game. I’ve given everything I have to the Roosters, but now I’m answering a different call… one that might surprise a few of you,” Robinson said, pausing as speculation buzzed through the media room.
Robinson then revealed he’s accepted a role as the head of performance and culture for the French Rugby Federation, ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
“Oui, c’est vrai,” he said with a smile. “Rugby league will always be in my heart, but I’m excited to bring what I’ve learned here to a different battlefield.”
Fans erupted across social media, some expressing pride in Robinson’s next chapter, while others felt blindsided by the sudden nature of the departure.
Club chairman Nick Politis issued a brief statement:
“We respect Trent’s decision, though it comes with deep disappointment. He is a Rooster for life, and we wish him all the best – unless he’s coaching against us.”
Assistant coach Jason Ryles is tipped to take over in an interim capacity, though the club has not made an official announcement regarding succession.
